The Playstation has ruled the world of console gaming for two generations. Radical marketting solutions have helped widen the entire consumer base for videogames. Cleverly they aimed for gamers in their late teens, helping to make gaming 'cool' for the first time. Indeed, many casual gamers still refer to all consoles as 'playstations'.
Released in 1994, the original Playstation sold over 80 Million units, with its updated replacement, the poorly titled 'PSOne' selling an additional 25 Million units. The rather stylish PSOne is far smaller than the original console, and is complimented by its own Screen peripheral, turning it into a PC Engine LT Beating tabletop game.
The Playstation and PSOne are both region specific. To Sony's disgust, third party importers did alter consoles and add multi-region chips to some machines. While 'chipped' machines are hard to find, there is a legitimate gamer interest as many games were released only in one of the three regions.
The Playstation 2 was released in 2000 and continued to dominate the games industry for the next five years. Despite getting off to a slow start, the PS2 has now sold over 130 Million units, in both its original, and 2004 Slim versions. Thanks to its dominance in Japan, many extraordinary games and hardware peripherals have been released, with the PS2 becoming the centre of the Bemani Music game phenomenon. Other add-ons includes Sony's Eye Toy, and Joytech's impressive clip on flat screen monitor.
