US Super Nintendo Information
The American version of the Super Nintendo looks quite different to the UK Super Nintendo or Japanese Super Famicom. It carries more of square lines, in a design supposed to retain more simularity to its prequel, the Nintendo NES. It also lacks the multi-colour logo on the body of the console, even the buttons on the controller are just plain purple.
Even the cartridges were re-designed specifically for US release. They are blocky, and almost military in style. They also don't fit into the slot on Japanese SFC or UK SNES machines. So, you definitely need an adaptor to play US games on a UK/Euro SNES, but grab a hacksaw, chop the slot about and you can play US SNES games on a Super Famicom. Strangely, controllers are also incompatible, despite looking the same, you can't use SNES/SFC/US SNES controllers on any console other than the one for that country.
Like the Super Famicom, in 1997 the US saw a re-designed version of the Super Nintendo. It's smaller and neater, but still has purple buttons. The last first party Super Nintendo game was released in the same year, Kirby's Dreamland 3, which like many excellent titles, was never released in the UK.
