Nintendo NES Information
The Nintendo Entertainment System, or NES, may not have been that successful in the UK, but in global terms along with its Japanese brother, the Famicom, it was the most dominant games console there has ever been. There were thousands of games released for the machine, including landmark 'first in the series' titles like Mario Bros, Zelda, Metroid, Metal Gear and Castlevania.
For many the NES controller remains the very symbol of retrogaming, however the NES has a fantastic array of available peripherals. From the Zapper, first decent light gun for any system, the four player multi-tap, to the incredible ROB Robot and the virtual reality inspired Power Glove.
Unfortunately, thanks to its non-standard cartridge connector buried deep inside the machine, the NES often suffers 'Flashing Power Light' syndrome. This means the game isn't connected in the slot properly, and has seen many NES machines resigned to the dustbin. Nintendo tried to fix the problem by releasing their own NES Cleaning kit, a special cartridge which cleans the slot, which does help in most cases.
In 1993 Nintendo relaunched the NES in the US with an improved model. This has its cartridge slot on top and doesn't suffer all the connection problems of the original model.
For those who want to play the vast number of American releases on their UK machine, i'm afraid the situation is problematic. A region lock out chip inside the machine prevents US games being played on UK machines, but can be relatively easily circumnavigated with a small hardware alteration.
