Nintendo 64 Information
The Nintendo 64 out-powered its rival Playstation despite using Cartridges to store its games. Nintendo finally proved the value of 3D gaming while reminding us of the delights of analogue controllers. Later Nintendo would introduce the first ever rumble device in a controller, and with a string of groundbreaking games like Mario 64, Zelda Ocarina of time and Goldeneye, it's status as landmark console is assured.
After the drab grey of the NES and the sun burn prone beige of the SNES, Nintendo discovered colour. Maybe not with the battleship grey of the initial console release, but in the array of coloured controllers. Later the console would be available in over ten colours, including transparent pink and purple and even limited edition gold. Inspired by the Pokemon phenomenon, Nintendo released a re-modelled N64 featured a Pikachu moulded into the casing.
In Japan Nintendo tried to thwart criticism of its cartridge only memory restrictions by releasing the 64DD and randnet systems. This disc system bolts underneath the N64 machine, and allows you to play the rather limited range of disc games. Randnet connected the system to the internet allowing games to be downloaded directly from Nintendo. Long delays and no worthwhile software meant little success for the system and no Western release.
