Nintendo Gamecube Information

Released in 2001, the Gamecube may have been Nintendo's least successful home console, but it still had a large library of quality in-house titles. These include the controversial but beautiful Zelda the Windwaker, the impressive Mario Sunshine, novel arcade management game - Pikmin and the return of NES Icon, Metroid to home console formats. Using 3" Nintendo specific optical CDs, the console remains one of the quickest formats to load from disc, many in-house games taking just a few seconds to boot.

Unlike rivals the Playstation 2 and Xbox, the Gamecube couldn't play DVD movies, however Panasonic licenced the Gamecube to create their own version wich included DVD playback. Unfortunately it was only released in Japan. However Nintendo did expand their system with several peripherals, a convertor to allow Gameboy games to be played, a broadband modem for internet access, and the infamous Bongo controller and its related games. Gamecube3 The use of region protection prevents imported games to work, however, the highly recommended Freeloader disc adaptor does allow you to play games for other regions on your Gamecube.

Before the success of the Nintendo DS, rumour was that a pocket version of the Gamecube was to be released to replace the Gameboy. Several prototype pictures (left) exist, and while the 3" disc format would certainly have suited a handheld machine, there is no solid information.

For the first time, backwards compatibility has been developed into Nintendo's current console. The Nintendo Wii will play any Gamecube games with dedicated Gamecube joypad ports built in. Games must be from the same region, but the Wii does accept the Freeloader disc to allow you to play imported titles.
